Illustrated by readings and historic films, authors Tony Collins (Leeds Met), Dave Hadfield (The Independent), Phil Caplan and Tony Hannan (Scratching Shed Publishing) will discuss their books, the recent boom in rugby league literature and why writers as diverse as David Storey and Thomas Keneally have found the game so fascinating.
Two stars of Leeds Rhinos, who turned their playground dreams of playing for their local team into reality, tell their own stories to inspire the next generation. They will share tales of their greatest moments in a Rhino’s shirt and reveal their rugby journeys from childhood to landing their first professional contracts. Hosting the session will be author Phil Caplan, whose new book captures the experiences of Rhinos on the rise.
Out-spoken, controversial and considered the greatest referee this country has ever produced, Graham Poll takes to the stage with sports writer and broadcaster Mick Dennis to bring their book, Geoff Hurst, the Hand of God and the Biggest Rows in World Football to life. Recreating some of the most outrage-inducing moments from football history, Graham will bring his own experience and insight into what went wrong and how football needs to change to prevent such travesties happening again.
Award-winning sports biographer and journalist Duncan Hamilton and broadcaster, film-critic and life-long cricket fanatic Barry Norman look at the impact of cricket on the English sensibility. From warm beer and fading light on village greens to the last vestiges of Britain’s Imperial past, these fans of the game will express how cricket has shaped their own lives, as well as discussing the wider cultural and political implications of the sport. Chairing the event will be broadcaster and journalist Martin Kelner.
Followed by the presentation of the Pongo Cricket Emerging Journalism Award Pongo Cricket is a new and ground-breaking media platform especially for cricket fans. Pongo Cricket, in association with Yorkshire CCC and other partners, this year launched the Pongo Cricket Writing Competition, an opportunity for existing and aspiring cricket journalists to showcase their work. Barry Norman will present the 2009 award to winner Benjamin Matthews.
